Story of naming of the St. Croix River

July 25, 1917

The Stillwater Messenger publishes an article written by G. W. Slater on the naming of the St. Croix River. Slater claims the name was created by Jesuit missionaries who viewed the river where it broadens by Afton, and forms a cross in the river, granting it the name "Saint Croix" meaning "Holy Cross".
